Let’s be honest - the words tax and accounting aren’t the highlight of running your own business are they?? When it comes to keeping on top of your finances, who can honestly say they log every expense and file every receipt?? Who actually keeps track of what they’re spending in B&M on their business vs. what they are putting in their trolly for themselves? NOT ME.
But here’s the thing…if you’ve got a business, money stuff matters. And burying your head in the sand about it is a bit like putting off that trip to the dentist when you have toothache. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets.
And this is why I invited the most down-to-earth and interesting accountant I’ve ever met - Alison Boucher - onto this week’s episode of the podcast. Alison is an accountant - but not the kind you’re picturing. I actually met her at one of my Match Made in Business speed networking events and, had it have been an actual speed dating event, I definitely would have ticked the compatibility box.
For a start, she loves everything we hate. It’s no secret that us creatives are notoriously bad at numbers - instead we are much better at coming up with random ideas at 2am and working on them until our fingers bleed…
Secondly - she is warm, friendly and so easy to talk to. Basically, the complete opposite of the intimidating accountant stereotype we all have in our heads.
And thirdly - she gets it. She’s a woman, just like you, who has taken the leap to start her own business after deciding that she was done with working for a company. Instead, she is using her 20 years of accountancy experience to set up on her own and help others in the same boat with an area of their business that they may struggle with.
So in today’s episode, I’m asking Alison all the questions you might be afraid to ask to make your business finances (or lack of..!) feel more manageable. We even play a little game of “Can I Claim For..?” and I’ll give you a spoiler: Canva subscription = yes. Prosecco = sadly no.
If you’ve ever shoved a pile of receipts in a drawer and hoped for the best, or if you’re putting off registering your business because the whole thing feels overwhelming, this episode will make you feel clearer and calmer about it all.
Listen and let me know in the comments what you wish you could claim on your business expenses!
Joanne
